LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO, a journalist from Pará State, the editor of Jornal Pessoal, needs the unconditional support of Brazilian public’s opinion because he has been a victim of constant persecution and injustice in reprisal of his determination in search for truth in order to comply with the universal precepts of journalism. The leaders of Rômulo Maiorana’s Communication Organization Group and the representatives of Justice of Pará State are among who want to silence LÚCIO FLÁVIO.

Resentment has been shown toward some well-known entities, such as, The National Newspaper Association (ANJ), Globo Organizations and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) - Pará State section, for their omission regarding the insults and physical assaults practiced by the members of Communication Group from Rômulo Maiorana’s Organizations (ORM), that have been trying by all means to silence LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO’s voice defending the land and the people of Amazon.

LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO is an icon among journalists in Brazil and in the State of Pará, who has received among many others, the Esso Award, the most prestigious one in Brazilian Press. He was chosen to receive this important award in New York, The International Award of Press Freedom, awarded by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). It’s an organization devoted to fighting for Press freedom.

LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO will be represented by his daughter, Juliana da Cunha Pinto to receive the CPJ Award because he can’t leave Pará State due to the law suits. He has been charged of 19 law suits in the Court of Pará, due to the information that has been published on Jornal Pessoal, a fortnight’s publication, that has been published by him for more than 10 years. By leaving the city of Belém, he can either miss the deadline to court of appeal in the law suits he has been charged of or he can be sentenced to pay a fine or even be sent to prison.

The majority of the law suits have been filed by the members of Maiorana’s family, from ORM organization that publishes the Newspaper ‘O Liberal’ (the biggest one in Pará State), who also own the ‘Liberal’ TV station, a branch of Globo Television. LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO was brutally assaulted in a restaurant in Belém by Ronaldo Maiorana and two of his body-guards, in January. Despite of filling a police report of physical abuse with physical exams, Maiorana filed one more law suit against LÚCIO FlÁVIO PINTO, claiming that the journalist was the attacker in the incident. In another law suit, Maiorana wants to prevent LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO from publishing any information regarding the Maiorana’s family, as an act of pré-sensorship.

LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO is the only victim of relentless persecution by a press firm, the ORM organization, one of the companies that finance the Press Freedom Internet site, created by UNESCO in partnership with the National Press Association (ANJ). The CEO of the company, Ronaldo Maiorana, who assaulted the journalist presides the Committee in Defense of Press Freedom of the Brazilian Bar Association - Pará.

You can send a message demanding an end to the persecution of LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO. Bellow is the letter that will be sent to ORM Group, Globo Organization, National Bar Association (OAB – Pará), ANJ, and the Court of Pará State.

To

Rômulo Maiorana Júnior, CEO of ORM Organization,Roberto Antonio Busato, president of National Bar Association (OAB), Ophir Filgueiras Cavalcante Júnior, president of Pará State Bar Association, Nelson Sirotski, CEO of ANJ,Milton Nobre, president of Pará Court of Justice, Roberto Irineu Marinho, CEO of Globo Organizations

Dear Sirs,

We are writing to demand the end to the relentless persecution of the journalist LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO by ORM Organization (Rômulo Maiorana’s Organization).

We would also like to extend our protest against The National Press Association (ANJ), that maintains the online site Press Freedom, financed by ORM organization, Pará State Bar Association (OAB-Pará), with Ronaldo Maiorana, as their CEO of the Committee of Defense of Press Freedom, and against the Justice of Pará State that has unfairly sentenced LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO for charging him of restraining Press freedom.

He is an icon among journalists in Brazil and in the State of Para. He has received among other awards, the Esso Award, the most prestigious one in Brazilian Press. He has been chosen to receive this important award, the International Award of Press Freedom, in New York, It was awarded by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an organization devoted to fighting for Press freedom.

He has been charged of 19 law suits in the Court of Pará, due to the information that has been published on Jornal Pessoal, By leaving the city of Belém, he can either miss the deadline to court of appeal in the law suits he has been charged of or he can be convicted, and eventually being fined or even being sent to prison. Therefore, LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO has been prevented from leaving Pará State.

The majority of the law suits have been filed by the members of Maiorana’s family, owner of ORM organization that publishes the Newspaper ‘O Liberal’ (the biggest one in Pará State), who also own the ‘Liberal’ TV Station, a branch of Globo Television in the State of Pará.

In another law suit, Maiorana wants to prevent him from publishing any information regarding the Maiorana’s family, as an act of pré- sensorship.

For all the reasons mentioned above, and in defense of press freedom in Brazil, I demand an end to this persecution through the law suits which have forbidden LÚCIO FLÁVIO PINTO of traveling, of working, and eventually of living.
